Risers

Offshore risers constantly grapple with the corrosive effects of seawater exposure. The splash zone, where the riser transitions from underwater to above water, poses a particular challenge due to varying levels of wetness and reduced effectiveness of cathodic protection (CP). To ensure their longevity and safety in demanding marine conditions, proactive measures are essential. One such solution is Visco-elastic Polyisobutene, which provides effective corrosion protection in these harsh environments.

Flanges and Gasket Protection

Offshore flanges and gaskets face significant challenges when it comes to corrosion. These components are integral to pipelines and pipework on offshore platforms. Exposure to hydrocarbon products in the pipeline subjects flanges to corrosive action from sour gases (such as H2S and SO2) and chemically aggressive fluids at elevated temperatures. This exposure leads to pitting of both the pipeline internals and the flanges themselves. Crevice corrosion, particularly problematic for stainless steel flanges in seawater service, occurs due to the concentration of corrosive materials between the sealing surface and gasket material. Once the flange face is damaged, it can no longer be effectively sealed by a gasket, necessitating either replacement or repair. Proactive measures, such as robust corrosion prevention plans and the use of reliable gaskets, are crucial to maintaining the integrity and safety of offshore flange systems.

Under Insulation and Spools

Corrosion under insulation (CUI) is a significant issue that affects the integrity of spools and other insulated equipment. It begins when moisture penetrates the insulation, leading to accelerated corrosion of the underlying metal. However, the application of visco-elastic Polyisobutene can mitigate these effects. This material adheres to the metal surface, forming a protective barrier that prevents moisture ingress. Furthermore, its visco-elastic properties allow it to maintain this protective layer even under mechanical stress, ensuring long-term protection against CUI. Therefore, the use of visco-elastic Polyisobutene actively contributes to the longevity and reliability of insulated equipment.
